Cupping

Cupping

Dynamic cupping is done by moving a cup over a select area to ease myofascial/muscular tension. Cupping then helps to bring down inflammation and promote circulation which in turn helps to speed up the healing process. This process can help people feel more relaxed, by decreasing muscle tension which helps with flexibility, range of motion, and ease of movement. Cupping may also be used for the treatment of generalized muscle spasms in the back or extremities, and various conditions involving nerve irritation such as sciatica and cervical radiculopathy.

Mechanism

With dynamic cupping techniques, your therapist will gently apply silicone cups to the affected area. When the cups are applied, the soft tissue will begin to rise into the cup, and the therapist will glide the cups along your skin using light, medium or strong pressure - based on your comfort level. Your therapist may then adjust the amount of pressure as therapy progresses.

What to expect

As with all therapies, there is a small risk of minor side effects which may occur after cupping, such as bruising and soreness. Don’t be a hero! Make sure you are communicating with your provider as your therapist can adjust the amount of pressure in future treatments to reduce side effects and allow your body to better take on the treatment. Your therapist will create an individualized treatment plan for you based on your diagnosis and overall goals and may also recommend it along with other therapies.
