Hydrotherapy/Aquatic Therapy
Hydrotherapy/Aquatic Therapy is any activity performed in water to assist in rehabilitation and recovery. Here at Centreline Physio, Sports & Wellness, we have the use of both warm and cool pools depending on your preference or practitioner recommendations. This style of treatment is popular for patients with neurological and musculoskeletal conditions.
Goals
Your therapist will create an individualized treatment plan for you based on your diagnosis and overall goals. Your practitioner may also recommend hydrotherapy/aquatic therapy along with other therapies to help reach those goals. goals may include muscle relaxation, strengthening, improving joint motion, and reducing pain. It is even integrated to improve muscle coordination and balance in select populations.
Benefits
Water is low risk, which is ideal for people who want to engage in exercise programs but may be at risk of falling. Individual movements are slowed by the buoyant force of the water and the hydrostatic pressure, and in addition, the viscosity of the water will help with timing of muscle activation.
Therapeutic Effects may include:
- Relieve pain
- Relieve muscle spasms
- Relaxation
- To increase/maintain range of motion
- Re-education of paralyzed muscles
- Strength and endurance
- Balance and coordination
